[00:00:12] And now, over to our host, Arthur Preston.
[00:00:18] We've all been there, we've done it, we've made that mistake that we regret afterwards.
[00:00:22] But that's okay, that's how we learn.
[00:00:23] And so today we're going to take a look at the 5 easiest mistakes that aquarium keepers can make.
[00:00:28] I've certainly done these, I'm sure many of you have as well.
[00:00:31] But let's go back and make sure that we cover the bases and try to avoid these as we go forward in this great hobby that we're involved in.
[00:00:38] So whether you're just getting started with your first tank or you've been doing this for many years,
[00:00:43] avoiding these common errors can save us plenty of headaches and make sure our fish stay happy and healthy.
[00:00:50] So, let's talk about those mistakes.
[00:00:53] Maybe you overfed your fish or bought a species you later found out definitely didn't play well with others in the tank.
[00:00:59] I would really love to hear the stories.
[00:01:01] So, share them with us on social media or drop a comment on the website at artsfisherman.coza.
[00:01:07] You can also add it onto the YouTube channel and we will find an audio version of this podcast as well.
[00:01:14] It's a great way for us all to learn from each other.
[00:01:16] So, feel free to drop a comment.
[00:01:18] Let's share those errors we've made.
[00:01:19] We've all been there.
[00:01:21] No embarrassment at all.
[00:01:23] Let's share them and learn.
[00:01:24] So, let's get into it.
[00:01:26] The first thing is overstocking.
[00:01:29] Now, you and I both know that it's really easy to get carried away when we're in the pet shop.
[00:01:33] We look at all those beautiful tanks, we see the beautiful fish and we think, well, why not?
[00:01:37] Why can't we add these to our community tank?
[00:01:39] Well, here's why not.
[00:01:40] Because when you pack too many fish into a tank, it's a recipe for trouble.
[00:01:45] Too much waste, stressed out fish, algae blooms.
[00:01:48] Because it's like trying to cram a party of 50 into a roommate for 10.
[00:01:53] Overcrowded fish get stressed and stress is a one-way ticket to sickness and aggression.
[00:01:58] Have you ever seen a territorial fish lose its cool?
[00:02:01] It's not pretty and can leave quite a mess in your tank.
[00:02:05] So, how do we avoid this?
[00:02:07] Well, it's really all about balance.
[00:02:10] Start by doing a little bit of homework.
[00:02:12] If you're dealing with big personalities like cichlids, you've got to make sure that they have a lot more space.
[00:02:17] So, really it's about common sense and knowing what species you're wanting to keep together.
[00:02:23] Also, make sure you test your water.
[00:02:26] A good testing kit will let you know if your tank's bioload, that's the waste load from your fish, is within a healthy range.
[00:02:32] Keep your eye on the ammonia, the nitrites and the nitrates.
[00:02:36] They will help you catch problems before they escalate.
[00:02:39] Number two is skipping the nitrogen cycle.
[00:02:42] It's a classic rookie mistake.
[00:02:44] We get impatient.
[00:02:45] We want to get those fish in as soon as possible.
[00:02:48] You've brought your shiny new tank, you're excited and you just want to see life in that tank now.
[00:02:53] But here's the deal.
[00:02:54] If you don't let your tank cycle, your fish are swimming into toxic conditions.
[00:02:59] The nitrogen cycle is your tank's way of breaking down harmful ammonia into less harmful nitrates.
[00:03:04] It takes about four to six weeks to establish.
[00:03:07] Yeah, it's slow but it's worth it.
[00:03:09] And there are ways to speed it up.
[00:03:10] We're not going to get into that in this podcast.
[00:03:12] We might do another episode on that later on.
[00:03:14] So if you're new to this whole aquarium hobby thing, try a fishless cycle.
[00:03:18] You could add a little bacteria.
[00:03:20] You can test your water until the ammonia and nitrite levels hit zero.
[00:03:24] It's less risky for the fish and much kinder in the long run.
[00:03:27] And if you're impatient, you can also use a bottle of bacteria starter to kick things off.
[00:03:31] But always test your water to make sure everything's balanced before introducing the fish.
[00:03:36] And if you're already cycling with fish, remember that it takes extra care.
[00:03:40] Frequent water changes and close monitoring are a must if you want to keep your fish safe during this critical stage.
[00:03:47] Let's talk about water changes.
[00:03:49] I know it's not the most exciting part of this hobby but it's really important.
[00:03:53] Skipping water changes or doing them inconsistently leads to all sorts of issues.
[00:03:57] Nitrate, build up, pH swings, unhappy fish.
[00:04:00] So make it a habit.
[00:04:02] Maybe it's every Saturday morning.
[00:04:03] Maybe it's on the weekend.
[00:04:04] Maybe it's a weekday night.
[00:04:05] Who knows?
[00:04:06] Find a schedule that works for you.
[00:04:08] Change 10 to 20% of your tank water weekly.
[00:04:10] And use a good water conditioner to neutralize those chemicals in the tap water.
[00:04:15] And while you're at it, you can also gravel vacuum the substrate.
[00:04:18] It's like giving your tank a little spring clean every week.
[00:04:21] And here's a pro tip.
[00:04:22] Don't just top off the water that evaporates.
[00:04:24] When water evaporates, the minerals and the waste stay behind.
[00:04:27] So you're not really improving your tank's water quality.
[00:04:29] You're simply just adding volume.
[00:04:31] Proper water changes are essential.
[00:04:35] Now here's another mistake that catches everybody, even experienced aquarists.
[00:04:39] And that's overfeeding.
[00:04:41] It's hard not to do this, right?
[00:04:42] Your fish look so excited when you sprinkle in the food.
[00:04:45] But too much food equals too much waste.
[00:04:47] And that messes with your water quality.
[00:04:50] Feed only what your fish can eat in a few minutes.
[00:04:52] And if there's anything left, scoop it out.
[00:04:54] Don't forget variety.
[00:04:56] High quality pellets, flakes, the occasional treat like frozen bloodworms.
[00:04:59] If you can, some live food as well.
[00:05:02] Keeps your fish healthy and vibrant.
[00:05:03] And keep in mind the specific dietary needs of your fish.
[00:05:06] Some species are herbivores.
[00:05:08] Others carnivores.
[00:05:09] And some are omnivores.
[00:05:10] Again, do your research.
[00:05:11] Work out what's best for your tank's inhabitants.
[00:05:13] And adjust your feeling accordingly.
[00:05:15] And remember, a fasting day once a week can actually benefit your fish by giving their digestive systems a break.
[00:05:23] Finally, number five, the big one.
[00:05:26] Getting into this without planning.
[00:05:28] We've all been there.
[00:05:29] Buying fish that turn out to be incompatible or choosing plants that need way more light than your tank setup allows.
[00:05:35] Do your research.
[00:05:36] Look into the species you want to keep.
[00:05:39] What their tank requirements are.
[00:05:40] How they get along with others.
[00:05:42] It's worth taking the time to plan out your setup.
[00:05:44] And the type of filter to the plants you'll use.
[00:05:47] Trust me, it saves you a lot of hassle later.
[00:05:49] And while we're on the topic of research, don't overlook the importance of learning about tank maintenance.
[00:05:54] Learn how to clean your filter without destroying beneficial bacteria or how to spot the early signs of disease.
[00:05:59] These things can make a huge difference to your success as an aquarist.
[00:06:04] Well, while we're going, let me just add one more.
[00:06:06] Just because I can.
[00:06:08] Let me sneak in this bonus.
[00:06:10] Ignoring fish compatibility is a major mistake.
[00:06:13] Not all fish are going to get along.
[00:06:15] And adding the wrong mix can turn your peaceful tank into a war zone.
[00:06:20] When planning your community tank, consider the factors such as size, temperament, order parameters.
[00:06:26] For example, a better might look stunning in your tank.
[00:06:29] But put it with the wrong tank mates and you've got a recipe for disaster.
[00:06:32] So do your homework and when in doubt, ask for advice from experienced aquarists.
[00:06:38] So there you have it.
[00:06:39] Overstocking, skipping the nitrogen cycle, inconsistent water changes, overfeeding, diving in unprepared, and the bonus one I mentioned, ignoring compatibility.
[00:06:50] Avoiding these mistakes will go a long way in making your aquarium the thriving, peaceful oasis you want it to be.
[00:06:57] And don't stress if you make a mistake or two or three.
[00:07:00] It's all part of learning.
[00:07:01] We learn, we grow, and our aquariums become better ecosystems as a result.
