00:00:00 --> 00:00:06 Welcome to this episode of the Aquarist's Edge, a podcast for home aquarists just like you.
00:00:06 --> 00:00:10 Learn more about how to keep a thriving aquarium and discover ideas and tips
00:00:10 --> 00:00:12 to give your aquarium the edge.
00:00:12 --> 00:00:15 And now, over to our host, Arthur Preston.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:22 Well, it's almost time to celebrate Christmas.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:26 And whether you are somebody who celebrates Christmas for religious reasons
00:00:26 --> 00:00:30 or who celebrates the fact that it is a festive time of the year.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:36 Here's an opportunity to get some ideas for gifting, either gifts that you will
00:00:36 --> 00:00:41 give others who are in the aquarium hobby or will give you ideas where people
00:00:41 --> 00:00:45 say to you, hey, I know that you're into fish. I know that you love keeping aquariums.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 What are the things that you would like us to give you?
00:00:48 --> 00:00:52 Have you got a wish list of items that you would like for your hobby?
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 So although by no means is this comprehensive, of these are probably many things
00:00:57 --> 00:00:58 that you would want to add.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:03 These are just some of the things that came to mind. So here's a list of gifts
00:01:03 --> 00:01:07 that I feel would be helpful no matter what stage of the aquarium hobby you are at.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:15 So let's start by perhaps asking about why we give these gifts anyway in this hobby.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:19 I mean there are other things you could give people but why would you give people
00:01:19 --> 00:01:21 a Christmas gift in the aquarium world?
00:01:22 --> 00:01:25 Well Well, I think, you know, every piece of equipment, every book,
00:01:25 --> 00:01:30 every little decoration represents far more than just a gift that you give somebody.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:33 It's an investment in creativity, in learning.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:39 It's about putting an investment into the care of the living animals that are
00:01:39 --> 00:01:41 within each aquarium, in each fish tank.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:46 And the right gift at the right time can inspire someone to explore new aspects
00:01:46 --> 00:01:51 of the hobby or to make their daily routine in fish keeping a little bit easier.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:57 And allows them to focus on what truly matters, which ultimately is the joy of fishkeeping.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:05 So let's start looking at this list. Well, a basic starter would be a simple aquarium starter kit.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:09 Now, some of these are available as commercial packs.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:12 Various brands will create these
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 and you'll be able to buy them at your aquarium shop or your pet store.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:21 These normally contain things such as the basic tank, a simple filter and heater,
00:02:22 --> 00:02:24 and clear instructions to make the setup foolproof.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:29 Of course, you could on your own create your own starter kit.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 You could buy these items and put them together.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:35 They often will include things such as a net, basic thermometer,
00:02:35 --> 00:02:39 and perhaps even a small bottle of water conditioner because it's those little
00:02:39 --> 00:02:42 things, those little extras that make a big difference for beginners.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:46 And you can imagine the excitement of someone unwrapping a brand new tank a
00:02:46 --> 00:02:50 Christmas morning, setting it up during the day, and thinking about the incredible
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 underwater paradise that they will create.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 Of course, for family with kids, this is an amazing gift because
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 it can be a real bonding experience that introduces children to responsibility
00:02:58 --> 00:03:03 and the beauty of nature and the child him or herself can not only consider
00:03:03 --> 00:03:06 putting this in their bedroom but perhaps if it's in a family space then they
00:03:06 --> 00:03:11 are responsible for making sure that item within the family living area is well
00:03:11 --> 00:03:14 maintained and cared for thereby teaching them responsibility.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:21 Another very useful gift is an aquarium water quality test kit and I would recommend
00:03:21 --> 00:03:26 going to the liquid test kits over the paper strips because they're more accurate and they last longer.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:31 You could also consider giving a small journal or a notebook with this so that
00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 the person who receives the gift can track their readings and they can learn
00:03:34 --> 00:03:36 how they tank cycles over time.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:42 Now books may feel old school in this highly digital age in which we live but
00:03:42 --> 00:03:45 there's something special about flipping through a colorful guide full of detailed
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 information about the various fish species.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:52 It will give information about compatibility, about fish health,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:56 about setup, about managing the day-to-day maintenance.
00:03:57 --> 00:04:01 These are really useful resource guides and I would consider looking for one
00:04:01 --> 00:04:05 with high quality photos and tips that are tailored for beginners.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:10 You could even take this a step further. You could pair the book with a voucher
00:04:10 --> 00:04:15 to a local fish aquarium store or a pet shop so that the recipient can choose
00:04:15 --> 00:04:19 their first fish having taken time to look through the book and discovered what they need.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:24 You may say well they could just look on google yes they could they could certainly
00:04:24 --> 00:04:29 go online and they could find all that information but having a book that is
00:04:29 --> 00:04:31 just readily available that they can dip into when they need to,
00:04:32 --> 00:04:35 is i still believe an invaluable tool.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 We could also talk about aesthetics, remembering that, of course,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:45 a tank isn't just a home for fish. It's a piece of living art.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:52 Whether it's a natural aquarium, you're going for a biotope or a bit more of a playful look.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:57 Substrate sets the stage for creativity. And so you could certainly include
00:04:57 --> 00:05:00 with a gift or make it a gift itself, a bag of decorative stones,
00:05:02 --> 00:05:06 some form of gravel or substrate that you know the person would want to add to the aquarium.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:11 Anything that could complement the substrates decorations and so forth you could
00:05:11 --> 00:05:15 add of course be aware of what the person's particular aquarium decorating style
00:05:15 --> 00:05:22 is if there's somebody who is looking for the natural look I would really avoid the Spongebob house,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:28 I would also suggest that you consider gifting live plants the live plants elevate
00:05:28 --> 00:05:34 any aquarium and hardy species such as Java Fern, Anubias and even Merimo Mossballs
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 are perfect for beginners.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:39 They're nearly indestructible and they don't need fancy lighting or CO2.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:44 You could create a mini plant bundle with an equiscaping guide for beginners,
00:05:45 --> 00:05:48 perhaps a small bottle of liquid fertilizer, and perhaps even planting tweezers.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:52 It's like giving someone their own underwater garden starter kit.
00:05:55 --> 00:06:00 A very practical tool for any fish keeper would be a magnetic algae scraper.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:06 And there's something really helpful about this tool. It's a simple gift, but it's really useful.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:09 Of course, some people want to keep some of their tank sides full of algae,
00:06:09 --> 00:06:13 but most will want to make sure that at least the front-facing panel will be
00:06:13 --> 00:06:16 clean, and a magnetic scraper will be a great help for this.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 Another practical gift is a bottle of water conditioner.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:26 Now, that might not be a glamorous gift, but it's a very, very useful gift to
00:06:26 --> 00:06:29 give, especially if it's a high-quality option such as Seachem Prime.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:35 It's really a staple for any fish keeper, and you could certainly pair this
00:06:35 --> 00:06:41 with another bottle of maybe beneficial bacteria or something else that would be helpful in the tank,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:46 almost a bit of a care kit that you could create as a gift.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:51 You could also consider putting together a variety pack
00:06:51 --> 00:06:55 of fish food there's so many varieties available today and in different forms
00:06:55 --> 00:07:01 your flakes and pellets freeze dry treats spirulina wafers algae wafers and
00:07:01 --> 00:07:05 so forth of course what makes it extra special is if you know what that person
00:07:05 --> 00:07:10 has in their tank you could create a variety pack that is targeting each,
00:07:11 --> 00:07:14 form or each type of animal in their tank.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:20 It shows that you have given some thought and you have care and concern for
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 the well-being of the creatures in that person's tank.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:29 Now, lighting, as many of us will know, is a game changer and a good LED setup
00:07:29 --> 00:07:34 not only showcases the vibrant colors of the fish, but also supports plant growth.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:38 So if you're going to give aquarium lighting, look for models with adjustable
00:07:38 --> 00:07:44 brightness and different color modes so Acorus can create that perfect ambiance that they need.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:51 For those who are more advanced in the hobby, perhaps those who are becoming
00:07:51 --> 00:07:56 more of a specialist fish keeper, you could consider a CO2 injection system.
00:07:56 --> 00:08:02 Now, this is quite a big purchase, but for somebody who really has taken this
00:08:02 --> 00:08:06 hobby seriously and who wants to go that next step in creating that planted
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 tank look, this is a wonderful gift.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:13 And you can look for kits that include regulators, diffusers,
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 bubble counters, and so on.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:18 Along with that, you could consider a high-quality filtration system.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:23 Advanced tanks often have high bio-loads, and a powerful filter is essential.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:29 And you want to find a filter that will combine efficiency with quiet operation.
00:08:30 --> 00:08:34 So do your homework, check what the person needs, and this is certainly a wonderful
00:08:34 --> 00:08:37 gift for those who would have need for it.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:42 If the person already has a CO2 system, already has a high-quality filtration
00:08:42 --> 00:08:46 system, A nice add-on is a dosing pump for liquid fertilizer.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:52 These pumps automate fertilizer dosing and ensure plants receive precise nutrients without the guesswork.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:59 You could also add some liquid fertilizer with this gift as a gift pack.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:06 There are also fun gifts that you could give for people who love the hobby.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:10 So it could be an aquarium-themed shirt, an accessory for their desk.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:15 Often these will have clever little slogans on them. Certainly on the art fishroom
00:09:15 --> 00:09:21 store, murder store, you'll find t-shirts that say, do worry be guppy, and this kind of thing.
00:09:21 --> 00:09:24 People who are accrues enjoy that kind of thing. They're into the hobby.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:28 They enjoy these little gifts, accessories, and various forms of apparel.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:34 You could also consider a beautiful piece of art that could hang up next to
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 someone's show tank in their home.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 Particularly if you know somebody well, you know the family well,
00:09:39 --> 00:09:43 you know what they need in their home, this could be a lovely addition as well.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:46 And of course, there's always the ubiquitous novelty mug.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:52 Who in the aquarium-keeping hobby would not love a mug that has some quirky
00:09:52 --> 00:09:56 saying on it that alludes to their love for aquarium-keeping?
00:09:58 --> 00:10:03 So, folks, that's the list as I have it now, but there are obviously many more
00:10:03 --> 00:10:03 gifts that you could give.
00:10:04 --> 00:10:09 And one of the things I haven't mentioned is a simple pet store voucher or aquarium
00:10:09 --> 00:10:14 store voucher, be that an online voucher or a voucher in hard copy.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:17 There are those who would say, well, vouchers are impersonal.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:22 And I would argue that I would think that a voucher gives the recipient the
00:10:22 --> 00:10:26 opportunity to choose something that they may not have bought themselves,
00:10:26 --> 00:10:30 that they would like, something on their wish list that maybe you don't know about,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:34 that they can take themselves off to the aquarium store and they can buy something
00:10:34 --> 00:10:37 that they perhaps have had on their wish list for some time and you,
00:10:37 --> 00:10:40 by giving them a voucher, have enabled that to happen.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:46 So lots of ideas. This is a hobby that we know can become expensive.
00:10:46 --> 00:10:49 It's a hobby that you can keep adding to, but it is exciting.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:54 And Christmas, this festive season, gives us the opportunity to give.
00:10:54 --> 00:11:00 And so I encourage you to think about the gifts that you would give others who are in the hobby.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:04 Give them something that is going to help them to enhance their tanks,
00:11:04 --> 00:11:08 to create a healthier environment, and to grow their knowledge of the hobby.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:14 So whether it's a practical tool, an inspiring book, a quirky gift,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:21 as long as it comes from the heart, from a place of goodness and genuine generosity,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:24 I'm sure it's going to be well appreciated by the recipient.
00:11:24 --> 00:11:29 And although there will be a couple of episodes before Christmas this year,
00:11:30 --> 00:11:34 I do want to wish all the regular listeners of this Aquaris Edge podcast a very
00:11:34 --> 00:11:38 joyful holiday season, filled with family and friends and, of course,
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 happy, healthy aquariums.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:44 So and so we meet in this podcast next time. Happy fish keeping.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 I'll see you at the next episode.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:51 That's it for this episode of the Aquaris Edge. Please consider subscribing
00:11:51 --> 00:11:55 to this podcast so that you don't miss further episodes. We would love it if
00:11:55 --> 00:11:59 you would also rate and review the podcast, as this helps make it visible to others.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:03 Until next time, keep learning and discovering, and keep finding your Aquarius
00:12:03 --> 00:12:06 edge in this captivating and fascinating hobby.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:16 Music.
