[00:00:06] Learn more about how to keep a thriving aquarium and discover ideas and tips to give your aquarium the edge.

[00:00:12] And now, over to our host, Arthur Preston.

[00:00:18] I think it's probably fair to say that most of us started out in our early days in the aquarium hobby keeping Neon Tetras.

[00:00:25] Because these amazing little fish are in every pet store.

[00:00:30] Every kid who has an aquarium at some point keeps these beautiful little flashy fish in their tank.

[00:00:37] So today we're going to look at a basic care guide for Neon Tetras.

[00:00:41] Many people are still keeping Neon Tetras.

[00:00:43] They are fantastic little fish in the aquarium.

[00:00:46] They're bright, they're fast, they look fantastic in a school together.

[00:00:49] And so today we're going to dig into how to keep these fish healthy and maintain the ideal habitat for them.

[00:00:56] The Neon Tetra is known for its stunning colours, its friendly demeanour,

[00:01:01] and they're a fantastic choice for both novice and experienced aquarists.

[00:01:05] So let's get into knowing how to care for these fish, from their habitat to their diet and their social behaviour.

[00:01:14] Let's start at the beginning.

[00:01:15] Where do we find these fish in nature?

[00:01:18] Well, the Neon Tetras are native to the rivers and streams of South America, particularly in the Amazon.

[00:01:24] They grow to about 4 centimetres in length and can live for up to 5 years or more in a well-maintained aquarium.

[00:01:31] Their vibrant colours are most pronounced when they're kept in groups,

[00:01:34] as this allows them to exhibit natural behaviours that enhance their appearance.

[00:01:38] They're also known for their peaceful temperament.

[00:01:41] They are excellent in community tanks because they just get on with every other species.

[00:01:45] Their small size and their sociable nature means that they thrive best when they're kept in schools of at least 6 individuals.

[00:01:53] In large groups, you can see them displaying their characteristic schooling behaviour.

[00:01:57] They dart around the tank in what seem to be synchronised movements.

[00:02:01] It's absolutely stunning to watch.

[00:02:03] So if you can afford to, in terms of space and budget, have a large number of Neons in your tank,

[00:02:08] go for it, you won't regret it.

[00:02:11] Now what about the ideal habitat for these amazing little fish?

[00:02:14] Well, creating a suitable environment is crucial for the health and happiness of your Neon Tetras.

[00:02:19] So here's what you need to think about.

[00:02:21] Firstly, your tank size.

[00:02:23] You want a minimum of at least 38 litres.

[00:02:25] That's for our American friends 10 gallons.

[00:02:28] It's recommended for a small group of Neons.

[00:02:30] However, the bigger tanks such as those around 76 litres, that's about 20 gallons,

[00:02:35] are even better as they allow for better water quality and more stable conditions.

[00:02:40] A larger tank also provides more sewing space

[00:02:42] and the opportunity for those natural behaviours I mentioned earlier.

[00:02:47] In terms of water conditions, Neons thrive in water temperature between 22 and 27 degrees Celsius

[00:02:52] with a pH of about 6 to 7.5.

[00:02:56] It's essential to maintain stable water conditions

[00:02:58] since rapid fluctuations can stress these fish, which can be sensitive.

[00:03:04] Regularly test your water parameters using a reliable test kit

[00:03:07] and you'll be able to make sure that you have optimal conditions for them.

[00:03:12] Make sure your tank is well filtered and well oxygenated.

[00:03:15] They prefer gentle water flow, so avoid strong currents that can make them feel insecure.

[00:03:20] A sponge filter is often an excellent choice

[00:03:22] as it provides adequate filtration without creating too much turbulence.

[00:03:27] In terms of lighting, Neons prefer low light conditions,

[00:03:31] just like in the rivers in which they are found in nature.

[00:03:34] Using subdued lighting can help reduce their stress and it will enhance their colours.

[00:03:40] Consider using floating plants or tall plants that provide shade

[00:03:43] to be a more comfortable environment for these little fish.

[00:03:50] So let's quickly talk about those plants.

[00:03:52] What plants would work well?

[00:03:53] Well, I would suggest things like Java moss, Anubias, Amazon sword

[00:03:57] and the obvious benefit to using these plants that also creates an improving water quality

[00:04:02] by absorbing the nitrates in the water column.

[00:04:05] In terms of substrate, a softer substrate like sand or fine gravel is ideal

[00:04:09] because it mimics their natural environment and allows for easy movement.

[00:04:14] Decorations in terms of driftwood or rocks can also create a natural feel

[00:04:17] and give additional hiding spaces.

[00:04:21] Now, as I've said a couple of times already, Neon Tetras are schooling fish.

[00:04:26] They feel safest in groups.

[00:04:27] So keep at least six together and that encourages their natural behaviour.

[00:04:31] They are peaceful by nature, making them excellent tank mates for other non-aggressive species

[00:04:36] such as guppies, rasboros and other small community fish.

[00:04:40] In addition to their social nature, Neon Tetras exhibit fascinating behaviour when kept in groups.

[00:04:46] You can observe them playing with each other, chasing each other around the tank.

[00:04:51] They swim in synchronised patterns.

[00:04:52] All quite entertaining to watch.

[00:04:55] And this social interaction is vital for their wellbeing.

[00:04:58] You'll note that solitary fish can become stressed or display signs of illness over time.

[00:05:04] What about feeding our Neons?

[00:05:06] Well, Neon Tetras are omnivorous and they require a varied diet to thrive.

[00:05:11] So you can offer high quality flake food as a staple diet,

[00:05:15] but don't forget to supplement with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms.

[00:05:20] This variety ensures they receive essential nutrients by mimicking their natural feeding.

[00:05:25] In terms of feeding schedule, feed small amounts two to three times daily.

[00:05:29] This will make sure that all fish have a chance to eat without competition from the largest species in the tank.

[00:05:34] And as we know by now, overfeeding can lead to poor water quality.

[00:05:37] So be mindful of portion sizes.

[00:05:39] Only feed what they will consume in a few minutes.

[00:05:43] If you notice that your Neons are becoming less active or losing colour,

[00:05:47] there may be an indication that they need a dietary boost or variety in their food.

[00:05:53] Regular maintenance is also key to keeping your Neons healthy.

[00:05:57] Make sure you're doing those water changes of at least 25% a week to maintain optimal water quality.

[00:06:03] Make sure your tank is cycled before placing Neons in the water.

[00:06:08] And make sure that you regularly observe your fish for signs of stress or illness.

[00:06:12] I've often said on this podcast and in other places that feeding time is often a great moment to sit and just enjoy your fish,

[00:06:21] but also to watch them.

[00:06:22] You'll certainly be able to see if your Neons are showing any signs of stress while they are eating.

[00:06:29] Neons can be prone to certain diseases if they're not properly cared for.

[00:06:34] The illness that is specific to Neon Tetra is actually known as Neon Tetra disease.

[00:06:38] And that's characterised by fading colours, pinched bodies and abnormal swimming.

[00:06:43] Unfortunately, there's no known cure.

[00:06:45] Therefore, prevention through proper care is essential.

[00:06:48] And really the bottom line here is to maintain good water quality.

[00:06:52] Look for those signs of stress.

[00:06:54] Lethargy, loss of appetite, clamped fins or unusual swimming patterns.

[00:06:58] And if you notice those signs, check your water parameters immediately.

[00:07:02] And do a water change if you need to.

[00:07:05] So in summary, Neons are not only beautiful, but are relatively easy to care for when their environmental needs are met.

[00:07:13] By providing a suitable habitat with stable water conditions,

[00:07:16] maintaining a proper diet with variety,

[00:07:19] ensuring they have company in groups and being vigilant about their health,

[00:07:22] you can enjoy their lively presence.

[00:07:25] And on that colourful note, I want to thank you for tuning into this episode of Acreous Edge.
