[00:00:12] And now, over to our host, Arthur Preston.

[00:00:18] Have you ever seen one of those tiny aquariums and nanotanks and thought,

[00:00:22] how do they manage to pack so much beauty into such a small space?

[00:00:26] It's like a whole underwater world in miniature.

[00:00:30] Nanotanks are certainly a fascinating part of this hobby.

[00:00:32] And they've only grown in popularity over the years, and for good reason.

[00:00:37] Yeah, some people are still going to be interested in the big mega tanks.

[00:00:40] They want to expand their hobby by buying a massive tank and putting in big oscars and other amazingly large fish.

[00:00:47] And for those who want to do that, there's space for them.

[00:00:50] They can go for it and enjoy it, but many of us don't have the space for that.

[00:00:54] And we still want to create an amazingly fascinating, beautiful underwater world.

[00:00:58] And nanotanks give us the opportunity to do that.

[00:01:01] So today, we're going to dive into everything you need to know about nanotanks.

[00:01:05] Why they're so special, what it takes to create and maintain one, and how you can make a big impact with a small aquarium.

[00:01:12] So, let's get into it.

[00:01:14] Let's start by asking, what makes nanotanks so appealing?

[00:01:19] Well, for starters, there's the practicality.

[00:01:22] Not all of us have the space, or quite frankly the budget, for a massive tank.

[00:01:26] A nano aquarium, typically under 40 litres, can fit on a desk, a shelf, even a little side table in your bedroom.

[00:01:34] You can have this stunning aquatic scene in places you wouldn't think you could accommodate an aquarium.

[00:01:39] But it's not just about size.

[00:01:41] There's something mesmerizing about the level of detail in a nanotank.

[00:01:45] Every little plant, every tiny fish, even the way the bubbles from your filter gently rise to the surface.

[00:01:51] It's like watching nature television.

[00:01:54] It's calming, hypnotic, and in many ways, perhaps more intimate than a large tank.

[00:02:01] Nanotanks are also a fantastic creative outlet.

[00:02:03] When you have limited space, everything you put into it matters.

[00:02:07] You're not just throwing things together, you're designing an ecosystem.

[00:02:11] It's a piece of living art.

[00:02:13] It's about making careful, thoughtful choices that come together in harmony.

[00:02:18] Let's be honest, there's something undeniably satisfying about hearing someone walk into a room,

[00:02:23] seeing a nanotank and go, wow, that's really beautiful.

[00:02:28] One common misconception is that nanotanks are only for beginners.

[00:02:32] Now, don't get me wrong, there can be a great starting point.

[00:02:35] But they're also an exciting challenge for experienced aquarists.

[00:02:38] With smaller tanks, you're working with tighter margins.

[00:02:42] Water quality, temperature, stocking levels, all of these things become even more critical.

[00:02:49] If you think of it a bit like this, a nanotank is the sports car of the aquarium world.

[00:02:54] It's compact, sleek, and high performance.

[00:02:57] But it requires a little more finesse to handle.

[00:03:00] If you're willing to put in the effort, the payoff is amazing.

[00:03:03] So if you're feeling inspired to start your own nanotank, where do you begin?

[00:03:07] The first step is choosing the right tank.

[00:03:10] And I would say start with 20 litres.

[00:03:13] It's an ideal size for beginners, but if you're confident, you can go smaller.

[00:03:16] Just remember, the smaller the tank, the less room there is for error.

[00:03:21] When it comes to choosing a location for your tank, it's not just about aesthetics.

[00:03:27] Obviously you need to avoid spots near windows where sunlight could cause algae growth or extreme temperature fluctuations.

[00:03:33] And make sure it's somewhere you'll actually enjoy looking at every day.

[00:03:36] But don't put it somewhere where you're only going to see it if you intentionally go find it.

[00:03:40] Put it somewhere where you can enjoy it, your family and friends can enjoy it.

[00:03:43] It is your piece of living art.

[00:03:46] Let's talk about what you need.

[00:03:48] A nanotank might be small, but it still needs the essentials.

[00:03:51] Filtration is non-negotiable.

[00:03:53] Unless, of course, you want to do one of those completely natural aquariums and no filter, just plants, etc.

[00:03:58] That can be done, but that requires a certain level of expertise and experience.

[00:04:02] So if you're just starting after nanotanks, I would suggest make sure you get yourself a decent filter.

[00:04:08] I'm a big fan of sponge filters for nanotanks.

[00:04:10] They're gentle, they don't provide strong currents, which is great for some other species.

[00:04:15] Easy to maintain and they provide excellent biological filtration.

[00:04:18] You do find small internal or hang-on-back filters that can work.

[00:04:22] Just keep your flow rate suitable for your fish in your tank.

[00:04:26] For lighting, make sure that for live plants you want a light that gives natural daylight.

[00:04:30] It keeps your plants healthy, but also brings out the vibrant colors of your fish.

[00:04:34] And don't forget heating, because most nanotanks will house tropical species.

[00:04:38] So keep the water at a steady 24 to 26 degrees Celsius.

[00:04:41] So invest in a decent quality heater with adjustable settings.

[00:04:45] And remember that temperatures can fluctuate quite easily in a nanotank.

[00:04:49] So make sure that you are buying a decent quality heater.

[00:04:53] Now aquascaping is where your nanotank really comes to life.

[00:04:57] Start with your substrate.

[00:04:58] If you're planning a planted tank, get hold of nutrient-rich soil.

[00:05:02] It supports healthy plant growth and provides a natural look.

[00:05:05] And for a low-maintenance setup, you can use sand or fine gravel.

[00:05:09] It also works beautifully.

[00:05:10] Your hardscape, rocks, driftwood or even decor items that you would buy at your local pet store,

[00:05:15] they're the building blocks.

[00:05:16] The key of course is balance.

[00:05:18] You need to think about how these elements interact with the space and with each other.

[00:05:21] You're creating a little artistic world here, so take your time to get it right.

[00:05:27] Plants are often the star of the show in nanotanks.

[00:05:29] Low-maintenance species such as java moss, anubias and crypts are perfect for beginners.

[00:05:35] If you're feeling adventurous, you could try a carpeting plant like dwarf hairgrass.

[00:05:39] It can transform your tank into a lush underwater meadow.

[00:05:43] And now let's talk stocking.

[00:05:46] When it comes to fish and invertebrates, nanotanks are best suited for small peaceful species.

[00:05:52] You can picture a school of neon tetras darting through the plants or a single beautiful betta fish gliding gracefully across the tank.

[00:06:00] Shrimp are another excellent choice.

[00:06:02] They're entertaining to watch and they help keep your tank clean by eating algae and leftover food.

[00:06:06] Now, it's important to remember the golden rule here.

[00:06:10] Do not overstock your tank.

[00:06:13] Overcrowding can lead to stress, poor water quality and even disease.

[00:06:16] It's far better to have a few happy healthy inhabitants than to push the limits of what your tank can handle.

[00:06:22] Now obviously, maintaining an nanotank is also really important.

[00:06:25] Regular water changes are essential.

[00:06:28] I would say about 20-30% each week.

[00:06:30] This will help keep the nitrates in check and ensure that your plants and fish have fresh clean water.

[00:06:35] Test your water parameters regularly.

[00:06:37] In a small tank, things can change quickly.

[00:06:40] So it's important to stay ahead of any issues.

[00:06:43] Don't forget to clean your filter and check for evaporation, especially if your tank doesn't have a lid.

[00:06:48] Now here's the thing about nanotanks.

[00:06:50] They teach you in this busy, crazy world we live in to slow down, to pay attention and to appreciate the little things.

[00:07:00] I remind you that beauty doesn't have to be grand to be impactful.

[00:07:04] And in our world that so often feels chaotic, there's something profoundly calming about having a tiny slice of nature that you are responsible for.

[00:07:12] So are you ready to try your hand at a nanotank?

[00:07:15] Whether you're a beginner looking to start small or a seasoned aquarist looking for a new challenge,

[00:07:20] these miniature marvels offer endless possibilities.

[00:07:22] I really encourage you to go out there if you don't have a nanotank already,

[00:07:26] go find yourself a small little aquarium, choose your housecap carefully, get your substrate set up,

[00:07:32] choose your filter and your lighting, give the tank time to cycle,

[00:07:35] and then get your little shrimp or your little ember tetris or neon tetris or maybe a showpiece better fish into the tank

[00:07:41] and enjoy the world that you've created.

[00:07:44] I have a tank on my desk that I glance over regularly.

[00:07:48] I find it incredibly calming and peaceful.

[00:07:50] I have a little red reddy shrimp in that tank

[00:07:53] and I'm planning on putting some small ember tetris into that tank as well.

[00:07:57] In my office, I have a similar thing.

[00:07:59] I have a tank of red cherry shrimp and I'm planning on redoing that tank in the new year

[00:08:04] and I'll be putting in some other little fish.

[00:08:06] And again, it's just an incredibly calming oasis in the midst of a very busy world.

[00:08:12] So if you have got a nanotank in place already or you're looking to start one,
